The Beauty of Cinemas

Roxy cinema being built - Mike Riversdale

Today just a simple photo out of a driving parked car. Depicting the Roxy Cinema in Wellington. I really love this kind of photos, they have this mechanical pseudo-objectivsm of Google Street Views.

Jon Rafman has a wonderful essay and a project page about this topic, although he tends to prefer the more spectacular or „meaningful“ motives and leaves out more mundane candidates… – the stuff that feeds this little project here.

The Beauty of War Memorials

Rangiora War Memorial - Harley James

Such a great shot! The light… – amazing! I am serious; slowly but safely we have published all the ugly New Zealand photos available in the world, and I can announce now: there were around 150 of them. The other 3.6 Infinitigazillion pictures of New Zealand are idiotically beautiful. Like, for example, the one above.

I hope you stay our friends when we will open our new project “www.idioticallybeautifulnewzealandpictures.com” soon.

The Beauty of Ponsonby Road

Ponsonby Road - Sids1

Ah, Auckland’s elegant Ponsonby Road, located in the prestigious… who am I fooling! The density of overpriced restaurants with incompetent staff is pretty top notch, admittedly.

Another guest post by the electrifying Alex Gilks:

“Hey Trev, I reckon we shud do up the front of the shop ta look somethink like the sea. Yeah a bit underwatery. But I really wonnit to look contempehry too. Corrugaded iron would look real good with the fridges. And it’s kinda friendly too eh.”

The Beauty of Birkenhead Ferry Terminal

Welcome to Birkenhead Ferry Terminal! - Jack Bowley (Javelin395)

OK, ladies and gentlemen, time to get busy again. Greetings from Birkenhead Ferry Terminal, the place where Bogie and Bergman didn’t kiss goodbye, presumably, but, according to new information provided by reader Mark Fitz, an overwhelming array of sexual activity of all sorts has been conducted. Who would have thought!

The Beauty of White Island

White Island - vtveen

Another guest post by the titillating Alex Gilks:

No, not the a snapshot of a Hutt Valley industrial estate – this is White Island, the site of NZ’s first full-scale World War II bombed buildings diorama. Weta Workshops tested many natural pigments before settling on the exact hue for mustard gas residue.

The Pottery of Old Beauties

Old Pottery Factory - Bekdawg

Bekdawg is back – her earlier contributions here and here – , and baffles us with another of her insights into the psychology of Kiwi architecture… and mass produced pottery. Only just barely I manage to suppress the urge for cheap puns with “Lottery” and “Harry Potter”…

Nelson Central Post Office Building - Murray Neill

On his very elegant website, Murray Neill offers an antidote to us: it could be also described as “Beautiful New Zealand.com”.

The photo above is from a cool series of aerial shots, taken with a kite. But even all this talent and technical equipment can’t turn Nelson’s infamous Central Post Office / City Council building into a beauty queen. Good for us! :)
