The Beauty of Fences Special

To the Wire - Neville10

Our avid (yet mysterious) reader Liz activated her research skills and discovered a bonanza of material about our – and more so New Zealand’s – fence obsession.

Let’s kick off the fence special with this misty, but geometrically inclining shot by Neville 10.

From hereon, I largely quote Liz’s report:

The urge to create fences and walls out of discarded items, not endemic to New Zealand but “practised with vigour”:

A… toilet fence?!?! Can I see some photos of that, please?

Boulcott St from Bridge - Caroline Glass

Our reader Caroline Glass contributed this visual symphony of 3 bicycles, an unspecified number of cars and heaps of concrete. Thanksalotta, Caroline! Another victim member of our steadily growing “Nest-besmircher Network”.

The Beauty of Fence Messages

Fence art 1 - Kristina D.C. Hoeppner

“Somebody used a fence and some pieces of cloth to “write” the sentence “It will all be OK” on a fence in Wellington.”

Fence art 2 - Kristina D.C. Hoeppner

“Now it was changed to “You are doing OK”. What will come next?”

Another masterpiece from the sensational Kristina D.C. Hoeppner. This time starring the typeface “Fence Sans Serif“ and documenting a message from a higher entidy.

The Beauty of Hammers

Hammer - Kristina D.C. Hoeppner

Whenever european architects mess up so badly that more than a dozen people get injured or killed, they are exiled to New Zealand. Where they do stuff like this.

A big thanks to the bodacious Kristina D.C. Hoeppner for providing all these gems under a Creative Commons license! It feels good to act legally from time to time!

The Beauty of Cinemas

Roxy cinema being built - Mike Riversdale

Today just a simple photo out of a driving parked car. Depicting the Roxy Cinema in Wellington. I really love this kind of photos, they have this mechanical pseudo-objectivsm of Google Street Views.

Jon Rafman has a wonderful essay and a project page about this topic, although he tends to prefer the more spectacular or „meaningful“ motives and leaves out more mundane candidates… – the stuff that feeds this little project here.

The Beauty of Trees… well… one… half… something.

Einsamer Minibaum - Till Seidenspinner

Cowabunga, dudes and dudettes!

We are back with a bag full of new shots! On top this silent masterpiece by the unstoppable Till Seidenspinner!

Supposedly somewhere in Auckland, perhaps in the Bayview area? … – Robotic stalker brigade! Go and bring me that exact location! … (Please? With sugar on top and stuff? Pretty please?)

Our reader Neo solved the location mystery: it is in Pt Chevalier in Auckland.

Updated, thanks to Neo: Google Maps Location

The Beauty of Fountains… Returnz!

TELPortfolio - Carter Fountain

A fantastic addition to our collection of oddly cropped, dark and heavily zoomed-in fountains. I think fountains and monstrosities are clearly becoming my favorite tags. More fountain fun herehere and here.

The Beauty of Lake Taupo

Jenny M - Lake Taupo

Jenny M. of the lovely german New Zealand Travel blog weltwunderer.de sends this wonderful shot of Lake Taupo. With some stuff in the foreground. I have no idea why anybody would consider this being ugly, given that the picture elements, composition, light and colours work beautifully together with the bacchanalia subtext (alcohol, shadow, plastic bag, the jungle)… – but hey, what do I know.

The Beauty of Ponsonby Road

Ponsonby Road - Sids1

Ah, Auckland’s elegant Ponsonby Road, located in the prestigious… who am I fooling! The density of overpriced restaurants with incompetent staff is pretty top notch, admittedly.
