Hamilton Statue: Tribute to the Farming Pioneers - Yvonne (yjeva)

Speaking of local sculpturing… farming power from the streets of Hamilton.

Google Maps Location. Well, more or less… – can anybody provide the exact spot?

The Beauty of Birkenhead Ferry Terminal

Welcome to Birkenhead Ferry Terminal! - Jack Bowley (Javelin395)

OK, ladies and gentlemen, time to get busy again. Greetings from Birkenhead Ferry Terminal, the place where Bogie and Bergman didn’t kiss goodbye, presumably, but, according to new information provided by reader Mark Fitz, an overwhelming array of sexual activity of all sorts has been conducted. Who would have thought!

The Beauty of White Island

White Island - vtveen

Another guest post by the titillating Alex Gilks:

No, not the a snapshot of a Hutt Valley industrial estate – this is White Island, the site of NZ’s first full-scale World War II bombed buildings diorama. Weta Workshops tested many natural pigments before settling on the exact hue for mustard gas residue.

The Beauty of Rugby. Player Sculptures. Made of Concrete.

Rugby Player Sculpture - Sids1

From the New Zealand Field Guide to Creating Regional Art:

“Outdoor sculpture may feature buxome, ovoid images of nature and fertility and sex; or monumental images of men playing sport, or riding horses, or standing around looking angry. But take care if combining these two incongruous styles. They may spawn uncomfortable results.”

Guest comment by the one and only Alex Gilks.

Exact Google Maps Location in Kaitaia, anybody?

The Beauty of Junctions

Junction, The Harley and the Austin - dcysurfer (Dave Young)

Haha, and you thought: “Oh, look at the cute Oldtimer.”

Sharing their economic prospects with the former Eastern Germany and North Korea, this is one of the most modern cars Kiwis have… on one of New Zealand’s most prestigious – note the absence of child-head sized gravel pieces – and widest streets, usually only used by Prime Minister John Key to fool the international press.

The Beauty of Dead Squids

Giant Squid Display - zayzayem

Yikes! Seen at Kelly Tarlton’s Underwater World, reviewed by “Google user” as “The most depressing place on Earth“. Intriguing!

A Pink Sheep - Sids1

Happy New Year! Well, what’s left of it… half-hearted apologies for being such a lazy fart lately. But bear with me, behind the scenes I have compiled a collection of truly shocking New Zealand shocks… err… shots. Which I will unleash in the next two weeks.

Oh, and this silly project is going to turn two years old on January 22. Some say two shots to the head would be the appropriate congratulation… I say: pfft!

The Beauty of Christmas

Mt Victoria Auckland - Rosino

A lovely Christmas and a prosperous New Year! We celebrate with this… outstanding composition by Rosino, who is at least 1) a superb photographer, check her/his Flickr stream, and 2) a true philanthropist: s/he publishes her/his photos under a creative commons “Attribution-ShareAlike” licence. Which means that I can rip off her/his works without even asking. Very practical!

A big thanks to Rosino, and also a huge thanks for a vibrant year to our avid Ugly New Zealand fanclub fanbase readers reader!

The Beauty of Bubbly Mud. For real.

Bubbling hot stinky mud - ilah

Ilah is the newest contributor to Ugly New Zealand, although she stresses that New Zealand isn’t ugly at all. True that: even the mud shots (mud shots, hahaha, hold me back!) look like art. And if you like this, wait until you see the photos on her Flickr stream.

Wedding day weather - Mel Hodgkinson

Actually, I don’t know anything about the wedding. Just about the weather that day. It wasn’t that good.
