The Beauty of Casino Testicles

21/12/2011 at 11:07 am

Is there a better way to celebrate the festive spirit than to present the testicular decoration of Christchurch’s Casino? I don’t think so.

This post is a shameless regurgitation of a “The Worst of Perth” article. The Worst of Perth is our – far superior – brother in the crime of regional mockery. Visit them to find out more thrilling geological details!

Happy Christmas, and have a couple nice days, y’all!
See you next year!

The Beauty of the Birds

UCOL, Palmerston North 1 - Wentao Yin

Let’s ignore the overwhelming Freudian and Hitch-cock-ian subtexts for a second, and let’s just enjoy this architectural tribute to Miles Davis. Another visual rollercoaster by the tremendous Wentao Yin.

The Beauty of Te Manawa

Te Manawa Museum, Palmerston North 1 - Wentao Yin

“Mom, why has the woman spikes in her bum?” Another action-packed Palmerston thrill-ride by Wentao Yin. Also don’t miss the bugs crawling all over the building. The perfect theme park for a relaxed post party drug chillout…

The Beauty of Four Square

Faggs "4 Square" store delivery van, Horopito - Ken Lankshear

Recently we talked about Kiwi nutrients, let’s highlight another facet of New Zealand’s shopping culture now. This limelight moment goes to food retailer Four Square and its (really) wonderful logo design… including the famous – and slightly creepy – “Cheeky Charlie”. Thanks for the great photo to Ken Lankshear!

The Beauty of Ahuriri

01/11/2011 at 10:36 pm

Ahuriri - Motella

Motella of the fittingly named blog “Motella” is looking behind the facades and under the guest beds of NZ tourism. He was so kind to send us some of his personal “Ugly New Zealand” shots.

Let’s start with this adorable portrait of Ahuriri“Napier’s vibrant seaside village” with “a contemporary edge”, where “you’ll discover a unique mix of places where you can buy artwork, indulge in some beauty therapy, buy ingredients for an Italian feast, post a letter and consult a lawyer, an accountant or other professional services now based in Ahuriri.” Gasp! What a mix indeed!! Book it!!!

The Beauty of Post Boxes in Auckland

26/10/2011 at 7:17 pm

Glendowie Auckland Postbox - Dom Yates

Reminds me of that news article about that elderly gentleman who mistook a rubbish bin for a post box over years, and wondered why nobody ever answered his letters. Like here, more a case of an unfortunate interface design than one of a particularly silly senior.

The Beauty of Kiwi Nutrients

New Zealand Shops - Bjørn Larsen

Bjørn Larsen provided us with this snapshot of a typical Kiwi shopping centre. I like how the shop fronts reflect the proportions of essential Kiwi nutrients: 20% pork chops and ground hooves, 30% fruit (Pineapple Lumps), and 50% booze.

The Beauty of UCOL

UCOL, Palmerston North 2 - Wentao Yin

Speaking of cars… I don’t know what exactly they consume on these parties at the Universal College of Learning in Palmerston North. The automotive guys should perhaps consider reducing their doses a bit.

Motueka 1989 - Travelling Light

More corrugated steel! More car(s)! More uncut 1989 oldschool flavour! More pure awesomeness by Travelling Light!

The Beauty of Waiting II

Waiting for the Elevator - krapzapper

Waiting for Wanganui’s Durie Hill elevator and tunnel, in this case. Totally not fitting our silly criteria, since it is by no means a lame shot. Witness how we surrender to great photography!
