Recently we talked about Kiwi nutrients, let’s highlight another facet of New Zealand’s shopping culture now. This limelight moment goes to food retailer Four Square and its (really) wonderful logo design… including the famous – and slightly creepy – “Cheeky Charlie”. Bjørn Larsen provided us with this snapshot of a typical Kiwi shopping centre. I like how the shop fronts reflect the proportions of essential Kiwi nutrients: 20% pork chops and ground hooves, 30% fruit (Pineapple Lumps), and 50% booze.
Speaking of cars… I don’t know what exactly they consume on these parties at the Universal College of Learning in Palmerston North. The automotive guys should perhaps consider reducing their doses a bit.

When the blanket of sudden winter snow melts a bit, and gets all gritty and sullied around the edges with brown and grey tyre juice, that’s when the folks of Timaru do what they do best: load up in a big ol’ 1980s Ford LTD style stretched limo, and head out to the main to cruise the mush, like a dirty big pink shark, looking to raise some hell.
I have a hunch that Rachel Tallon isn’t entirely happy with the Westfieldmall shopping center in Lower Hutt:
“A monstrosity that suddenly appeared in my home town a few years ago. Shaped like a Borg ship, with as much character, this imposing monolithic structure stands as a windowless monument to consumerism. (…)
Dull grey boxes plonked on top of a stress-inducing carpark, this rectangular tomb of doom to your credit card is now the heart of my town.”
